Current Regulations:

The current Motor Vehicle Prohibition maps for the Kootenay Region can be found at https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/sports-culture/recreation/motor-vehicle-prohibitions

Proposed Regulations:

Pull back 2.4 km of seasonally open road to specified safe public turn around area (50°19.856’N 116°1.403’W) and remove a small section or year-round open road to align with industrial road deactivation efforts.

The proposed regulation changes are intended to provide the public a safe turn around location to align with the industrial road deactivation completed to protect wildlife and its habitat from impacts of a loop road created during forest harvest.  This regulation change will deter motor vehicle use through important fish bearing habitat.

The original rationale for the development of this MVCA considered the positive impacts of restricted motorized use for the benefit of mountain goats, elk and mule deer. Habitat capability modelling shows that this Motor Vehicle Closed Area also supports grizzly bear and moose habitat. An additional consideration includes Westslope cutthroat trout, which benefit from motor vehicle restrictions by way of reduced sedimentation into breeding habitat, and reduced risk of riparian habitat degradation.
