Current Regulations:

Currently there is no private land only December general open season for turkeys in MUs 4-7 to 4-9 and 4-14 to 4-18.

Proposed Regulations:

Implement any turkey season from Dec 1-Dec 31 on private land only in MUs 4-7 to 4-9 and 4-14 to 4-18.

Rationale:

Turkey populations in the West Kootenay region have shown significant growth over the past 15 years. A growing number of turkey flocks in this area winter on private land in rural and residential areas and can become a nuisance as flocks become large. Increasing hunting opportunity for turkeys on private land provides landowners with additional tools for managing nuisance flocks.

There have not been any wild turkey population surveys or monitoring programs in the west Kootenays. However, hunter harvest has shown significant growth in the past 15 years from 0 in 2004 to over 500 in 2019, and anecdotal reports indicate turkey populations continue to increase. Though there is no formal tracking system, complaints of nuisance turkeys appear to have risen over the past years as landowners become frustrated and look for solutions.
