Decision Statement:

This regulation was approved as proposed and is included in the 2020-2022 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Synopsis.

Current Regulations:

Within the High Cultural Use Areas of the Kaska Dena the general open seasons for moose is:

August 23-31 – Any Bull

Sept. 1-Oct 31 – SOFT 10 (spike-fork, tripalm, or 10 point).

Proposed Regulations:

Close moose hunting from Oct. 1-15 (rut period) within the High Cultural Use Areas of the Kaska Dena First Nation (see the “Additional Information” section for maps of the High Cultural Use Areas).

Rationale:

Generally, the focus of the objectives are to encourage or disperse hunters into more remote areas with open seasons, while managing high cultural use areas near communities.  All the proposed areas are located near Kaska communities and are of spiritual, historic, cultural, social, and environmental importance to the Kaska Dena. These areas are the location of culture camps, family cabins and camps, are used to meet sustenance needs, and maintain and exercise traditional practices and cultural uses.  (Note: these are not all the high cultural use areas in the traditional territory and do not limit of define rights or cultural, spiritual, or traditional uses which exist throughout the Kaska Dena Traditional Territory).

The proposal also aligns with regulations in Management Units 7-20, 7-21 and 7-32 to 7-35.
