Rationale:

A mule deer composition survey was completed in December 2018. The buck/100 doe and fawn/100 doe ratios are good; however, the 4pt bucks post-harvest ratios are low. Hunters have indicated legal mule deer are challenging to find during the November hunting season. The any-buck season is intended to provide opportunity to harvest a mule deer buck and reduce pressure on the 4-point cohort.

Timing the hunt for late-October would also aid as preventable measure to avoid the over-harvest of bucks, as they are not in full rut and still show summer behavioural patterns making them more difficult to hunt. Hunters who are successful during the ‘any buck’ season would no longer be targeting the mature 4-point bucks during the November general open season (the regional mule deer bag limit is 1), thus reducing hunting pressure on the mature class of bucks. It is expected that this change will result in a moderate increase in harvest but will shift the harvest distribution to other age classes. This will be a short season to prevent a significant increase in harvest.
