Decision Statement:

This regulation was approved as proposed and is included in the 2020-2022 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Synopsis.

Current Regulations:

Numerous highways in the Province have prohibitions or restrictions on hunting or the discharge of firearms within 400m of the highway. There is currently no such restriction on highway 99 (Sea to Sky Highway) between Squamish and Pemberton or the Callaghan Road in the vicinity of the Resort Municipality of Whistler.

Proposed Regulations:

Hunting and the discharge of firearms is prohibited within 400 m of the road allowance of Hwy 99 between the northern boundary of the District of Squamish to the southern boundary of the Resort Municipality of Whistler and within 400 m of the road allowance of Callaghan Road from the northwest corner of the Resort Municipality of Whistler to the gate at the Whistler Olympic Park.

Rationale:

This proposal is specifically being brought forward to address the increasing public safety concerns and recreational use along Highway 99 (Sea to Sky Highway) from Squamish to Pemberton.  Currently, there are limited regulations in place along Highway 99 compared to similar roadways in British Columbia.  The No Shooting Area regulations currently only apply to Highway 99 from the north end of the Municipality of West Vancouver to the southern boundary of the District of Squamish.
