Decision Statement:

This regulation was approved as proposed and is included in the 2020-2022 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Synopsis.

Current Regulations:

It is currently a requirement to have a wolf compulsory inspected that is hunted or trapped in the Kootenay Region.

Proposed Regulations:

Remove compulsory inspection requirement for wolf in the Kootenay Region.

Rationale:

In 2016, reporting of harvested wolves was changed from Compulsory Reporting (CR) to Compulsory Inspection (CI) to obtain more precise data on number of wolves harvested, location and specimen characteristics. When CI was proposed in 2016, it was indicated that this requirement would be for a short time frame only to gather some baseline data. The program is now proposed to be removed in lieu of using hunter survey data to estimate annual harvest.
