Decision Statement:

This regulation was approved as proposed and is included in the 2020-2022 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Synopsis.

Current Regulations:

It is currently prohibited to discharge a firearm using a single projectile within 400m of Highway 20 between Bella Coola and the westerly boundary of Tweedsmuir Park

Proposed Regulations:

Repeal the single projectile prohibition.

Rationale:

The Bella Coola valley is quite narrow and portions of it are less than 800m wide.  The 400 meter single projectile closure on both sides of HWY 20 is restrictive and limits most hunting opportunities for big and small game within the Bella Coola Valley (especially on mountain sides/winter ranges). Remote access throughout these MUs will make it difficult to negatively impact overall game populations given steep mountainous terrain, thicker habitat/vegetation, and limited access/logging roads.

It’s proposed that this portion of Hwy 20 be amended to follow regulations on road allowances of all numbered highways and any two lane or greater public road in BC. The no hunting or shooting within 100 meters of a dwelling would still apply, and the 400 meter closure would still remain in effect within BC Parks boundaries.
