Laxgalts’ap (Old Town) is an original village of the Gitga’at and is fundamental to Gitga’at cultural, political and historical identity. Today, Laxgal’tsap remains a cultural cornerstone to the Gitga’at people and is important for harvesting and cultural activities. Gitga’at Oceans and Lands Department (GOLD) and BC Parks are co-developing a Management Plan for the K’waal and Alty Conservancies, which make up a large portion of this area of interest.

Populations of surrounding communities are increasing due to new industrial developments in the area. The proposed closure is intended to mitigate potential impacts to culture values, harvesting rights and community goals as set out in the Gitga’at Land Use Plan.

Gitga’at First Nation is part of the Coastal First Nations Reconciliation Protocol. This agreement outlines the Province’s commitments and procedures for engagement and consultation with the First Nation signatories of the agreement. Through the process outlined in the agreement, Gitga’at First Nation and regional staff developed consensus recommendations for proposed changes to the hunting and trapping regulations synopsis that would address Gitga’at peoples’ concerns, while maintaining opportunity for resident and non-resident hunters.
