Regulation Number:
2023-03-05
Status:
Proposed
Region:
Region 3 - Thompson
MU:
3-46
Regulation Type:
Method/Gear/Bait
Species:
Rainbow Trout
Closing Date:

Decision Statement:

Pending

Current Regulations:

No ice fishing; Rainbow trout daily quota = 2; bait ban, single barbless hook

Proposed Regulations:

No wording required- remove from Water Specific Regulations, default to regional regulations (5 Trout/day no gear restrictions).

Rationale:

Smith Lake currently has healthy densities of rainbow trout, and restrictions for trout fishing by both time of year and gear are unnecessary given the current fish populations and fishery conditions of the lake.  Smith Lake is remote with no vehicle access; removal of additional restrictions on the fishery will provide angling opportunity and promote effort.

Additional Information:

Stock assessment, stocking reports and anecdotal reports from anglers have shown that there is a healthy density of trout in Smith Lake. Because there is a healthy population of trout and the lake has no vehicle access with low angling pressure, a change of regulation poses no conservation concern
