Decision Statement:

Current Regulations:

The current Motor Vehicle Prohibition maps for the Kootenay Region can be found at https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/sports-culture/recreation/motor-vehicle-prohibitions

Proposed Regulations:

Remove Height of the Rockies Provincial Park from the boundary due to overlapping differing legislation under the Park Act (snowmobiling not allowed) and the Wildlife Act (snowmobiling allowed except in no use polygons) putting snowmobile users in induced error through different legislation.

Big Weary Ridge seasonal ATV only trail reroute to mitigate forest harvest impacts to authorized trail.  Relocate section of trail to newly created road and remove section of previous trail.

The proposed regulation changes are intended to clarify areas where snowmobile use is permitted and not permitted to increase compliance and minimize disturbance to wintering mountain goats as well as to mitigate forest harvest impacts to designated ATV only trail.

The original rationale for the development of this Motor Vehicle Closed Area (MVCA) considered the positive impacts of restricted motorized use for the benefit of moose, elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep and mountain goat habitat. Habitat capability mapping shows that this MVCA supports grizzly bear habitat as well. Additional considerations include Westslope cutthroat trout and bull trout habitat, which benefit from motor vehicle restrictions by way of reduced sedimentation into breeding habitat, and reduced risk of riparian habitat degradation.
