Proposed Regulations:

Seasonally close Shoefly Road at designated location (49°19.131’N 114°54.720’W) due to Transport Canada road upgrade increasing motor vehicle use potentially impacting wildlife during hunting season or migration and spring parturition period. Potential season closure dates are September 1- November 10 and May 1 - May 30.

Rationale:

Road use modification is required due to Trans Canada road upgrade needs for twinning of the pipeline. This road upgrade is anticipated to increasing motor vehicle use and potentially impacting wildlife during hunting season and important winter migration and spring parturition period.

The proposed regulation changes are intended to reduce impacts to regionally important wildlife species and habitat following industrial access improvements in the Motor Vehicle Closed Area (MVCA).

The original rationale for the development of this MVCA considered the positive impacts of restricted motorized use for the benefit of bighorn sheep, mule deer, and white-tailed deer. Habitat capability mapping also shows this MVCA supports mountain goat, grizzly bear, elk and moose habitat. Additional considerations include Westslope cutthroat trout and bull trout habitat, which benefits from motor vehicle restrictions by way of reduced sedimentation into breeding habitat, and reduced risk of riparian habitat degradation.
