Geological Summary
Gypsum occurs in the Middle Silurian-Middle Devonian Burnais Formation. The lithology strikes northeast and dips southeast and is banded and laminated and occasionally brecciated with argillaceous gypsum, anhydrite and sometimes limestone in a matrix of black-grey- white gypsum. Extensive faulting, folding and pre- and post-glacial erosion is evident. The deposits are usually small in size (less than 1.8 million tonnes) and overlain by varying thicknesses of glacial till.
