Management Area:
Upper Fraser
Parks:
Purden Lake Park
Term:
19 years, 3 months and 3 days
Summary of Activity:
To install a weather station within the Purden Lake Provincial Park. The purpose of this weather station is primarily for climate change research, in particular for how it may impact bull trout in the Bowron Watershed; however, bull trout will not be sampled in the park, only the weather/climate will be sampled. The location of Purden Lake park is ideal to capture the climate of the lower Bowron watershed where no previous weather monitoring exists. This project is being run by Omineca Resource Management section of the BC Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development. The project will assess current and future climate change within the Bowron watershed and its impacts to bull trout habitat and make recommendations for forest management/operational decisions. The weather station will also fill a known provincial monitoring gap, weather data will be made publically available online and may also be useful for the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, will become part of FLNRORD's Forest Ecosystem Research Network, and will be listed in BC's Climate Related Monitoring Program weather station database. The installation and bi-annual station maintenance will be done by Vanessa Foord, FLNRORD North Area Research Climatologist and/or her technicians. Ideally the station will be installed this summer and will run until Vanessa retires if approved. I have spoken to both Desirae McMurray and Peter Goetz, who had no issues with the install request. We plan to share all weather data with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change as well as our climate change analysis from this proposed station.
