Term:
4 years
Summary of Activity:
Project objectives are to (1) determine whether a buried, paleo-channel exists beneath Tweedsmuir Glacier; (2) resolve when Alsek River migrated into Turnback Canyon; and (3) test whether (and when) the channel might become exposed during glacier retreat, possibly allowing migration of anadromous fish. Research activities will consist of using Ice Penetrating Radar (ICR), Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), installing an automatic weather station and time-lapse camera(s), collecting sand and gravel samples, as well as collecting non-lethal tissue samples from Alsek and nearby sockeye.
