Management Area:
Babine
Parks:
Babine Mountains Park, Call Lake Park
Term:
2 years, 8 months
Summary of Activity:
Aim is to sample traits and phenological cues of up to 25 deciduous species; work involves flagging and tagging (small metal tags) 10-25 individuals of each species, collecting several leaves, seeds, and -- in fall, when plants are dormant -- cutting ends of branches to force in controlled environment settings (i.e., growth chambers at UBC). Plants are only pruned, we generally take less than 20% of total plant aboveground biomass; we have seen no negative consequences of sampling after 4 years of work in eastern forests.
