Small mammals are live trapped using small metal traps with wooden boards on top to provide shade and shelter. The traps are equipped with bedding, food and moisture so that animal welfare is maintained. The traps are set before nightfall, and checked immediately at sunrise the following morning. Any captured individuals are measured, weighed, sex will be determined, and a small ear tag will be attached so that future recaptures are known. The health of the individual will be carefully monitored during handling (this is possible with a 2-person crew). Animals will be released live after this short handling period (~15 minutes). If animals are recaptured, they will be released immediately.
