Lax Kwil Dziidz and K'yel Archaeology Project - we are studying the history of two ancient village sites on Indian Reserves controlled by the Gitga'at First Nation, however we anticipate that archaeological remains of these villages extends beyond the Reserve boundaries, therefore necessitating Parks Research permits. Our research team is a partnership between the Gitga’at First Nation and Simon Fraser University Department of Archaeology. Broadly stated, we have three main objectives in this research: Objective 1. A detailed documentation of archaeological material at the village sites of Lax Kwil Dziidz/Clamstown/FhTh-3 and K’yel/FgTh-1, including mapping, radiocarbon dating, and studying zooarchaeological remains in order to reconstruct site development and occupational history through time. Objective 2. To reconstruct long-term histories of postglacial landscape change at and around these sites through reconstructing histories of relative sea level change in the study areas. Objective 3. To use the paleolandscape reconstructions from Objective 2 to survey areas around Lax Kwil Dziidz and K’yel for Terminal Pleistocene or Early Holocene archaeological components associated with paleoshorelines.
