Callaghan Lake Park, Brandywine Falls Park

Term:
5 years
Summary of Activity:
This research program aims to better understand a suite of basalt lava flows that cover the floor of the Callaghan and Cheakamus valleys. It will include geological mapping, rock sampling, and paleomagnetic core sampling. Geological mapping will involve traversing by foot through the park, hiking on pre existing trails and traveling over the lake via non-motorized vessel in order to characterize the rock types existing in the park. Rock sampling will involve taking 10-15cm sized pieces of rock from outcrops via hammer for geochemical analysis to determine age and origin of the rock. Paleomagnetic core sampling will involve removing 10 cm long, 2.5 cm diameter pieces of rock from outcrop via small, hand held drill in order to determine the age of the rock. This project, along with the samples we hope to take, will help us discover more about the dynamic, volcanic past of the Callaghan and Cheakamus valleys.
