Summary of Activity:
The water bodies in Swan Lake Kispiox River, Babine River Corridor, and Morice Lake Parks represent critical fish habitat within the Skeena River watershed. Better understanding of how surface water thermal regimes respond to environmental and watershed drivers requires robust, long-term monitoring of water temperatures. Monitoring of water temperatures in these parks is part of our Water Temperature Monitoring Program, a larger temperature monitoring initiative by the Skeena Fisheries Commission (SFC) in partnership with the Gitksan Watershed Authorities (GWA) and Office of the Wet'suwet'en to better understand surface water thermal regimes, thermal refugia, and potential climate change effects on fish in the middle and upper Skeena River and its tributaries. Our water temperature monitoring requires installing small water temperature loggers in housing at discrete locations within respective rivers and lakes. These installations are temporary and will be removed completely once monitoring is complete. In addition, limnology monitoring of Swan Lake and Morice Lake will contribute to baseline information on sockeye salmon rearing habitat and contribute directly to recovery planning efforts by First Nations for stocks in these systems.
