Summary of Activity:
We wish to re-survey long-term monitoring sites that were established in 2006. This research is part of the Global Observation Research Initiative in Alpine Environments (GLORIA - www.gloria.ac.at), a global research initiative to establish and maintain a world-wide long-term observation network in alpine environments. Activities include vegetation surveys ideally every 5 10 years, replacing temperature loggers when they expire every 5 years, and uploading all data to the GLORIA database.
The world is falling short on 2020 targets to halt biodiversity loss. The GLORIA Programme supports alpine biodiversity in the following ways:
1) Vegetation and temperature data collected at the GLORIA sites are used for discerning trends in species diversity, composition, abundance and temperature.
2) The data is then used to assess and predict losses in biodiversity and other threats to fragile alpine ecosystems which are under accelerating climate change pressures.
3) Finally, with these assessments and predictions, better management decisions can be made to support biodiversity.
