Management Area:
Saanich/South Gulf Islands
Parks:
Mount Tuam Ecological Reserve, Mount Maxwell Ecological Reserve
Term:
4 years, 6 months and 19 days
Summary of Activity:
The project will monitor for Sharp-tailed Snakes in Mt. Tuam ER and Mt. Maxwell ER. The work will include monitoring artificial cover objects (ACOs) and collecting swab samples from the underside of ACOs and 100 mL soil samples from below the ACOs to analyze for environmental DNA (eDNA). The work will provide information about the distribution of Sharp-tailed Snakes and will note other incidental Species at Risk to guide BC Parks management planning. If funding is available, some encroaching conifers next to Species at Risk may be girdled to maintain the open habitat they require. In Mount Tuam ER, cut and/or girdle previously mapped Douglas-fir trees less than 25cm diameter, under 2m tall and less than approximately 25 years old.
