Parks:

Thorsen Creek Conservancy

Term:
10 years and 2 days
Summary of Activity:
The Nuxalk Nation desires to continue their existing sand and gravel operation. The Thorsen Creek Conservancy boundary when created by the BC Government included a pre-existing working/pit area for a sand and gravel removal operation. In addition it prevented the Nuxalk from developing future sand and gravel and being able to comply with government safety regulations on managing a sand and gravel operation that meets current industrial regulations. The Nuxalk Gravel Pit area within the existing Thorsen Creek Conservancy is immediately needed to satisfy Nuxalk Nation priority projects on Bella Coola IR #1. An area of approximately 3.7 ha's (Area A in turquoise on the attached map) is required to allow operations to occur within the Conservancy. In addition, a longer term process is being initiated with BC Parks to result in the permanent removal and boundary adjustment of both Area A and Area B (Red on attached map) from the Conservancy. It is the intent of the Nuxalk Nation to apply to FLNNROD for a new License of Occupation for all the area West of the Conservancy (highlighted in purple on the attached map) to facilitate ongoing sand and gravel removal operations for the next 100 years. Once the boundary amendment to Thorsen Creek Conservancy is dealt with by the BC Parks, both Area A and Area B will be added to the License of Occupation for the entire area once Nuxalk receives that from FLNROD.
