Management Area:
South Gulf Islands
Parks:
Mount Maxwell Ecological Reserve
Term:
10 years
Summary of Activity:
We would deploy a hydrophone (underwater microphone) for the Cowichan Tribes that is mounted on a 2x2 foot tripod at an approved location (Mount Maxwell Ecological Reserve) at an approximate depth of 20 meters to collect acoustic data on whale species in the area, as well all underwater noise levels, including marine vessel activity. The underwater hydrophone, that sits on the ocean floor at 20 meters depth will be connected to a cable, that will be attached through the intertidal zone and connected to a land-based pelican case. The cable is not visible and secured to shore therefore would not interfere with any boat or water activities. The pelican case is 2 feet by 2 feet, and inside will be 4 batteries to power the hydrophone, a solar controller, a fuse box and recording device. Connected to the pelican case will be 2 solar panels, all with the purpose of providing power to the underwater hydrophone, radio transmitter if applicable and recorder. Photographs and an additional document have also been attached to this proposal.
