Summary of Activity:
There is limited scientific information on environmental contaminants and bats. The goal of this research is to evaluate the effects of pesticides and wildfire smoke on bat health in southern BC. Specific health markers to be studied are 1) endocrine disruption, 2) genotoxicity, and 3) infection. To complete this research, Haynes Lease is proposed to be included as a study site where the following will occur:
Bat capture & release using mist nets, sunset to sunrise, over 3 nights mid-June to mid-July in 2024, 2025, and 2026
Hair trimmed off bat backs,
Small amount of blood (10 microlitres) sampled from interfemoral vein
Equipment & handling tools disinfected following Canadian Wildlife Health guidelines
Capture along cliff edges at NW corner
Access on foot from Meadowlark Lane & existing paths used to minimize vegetation disturbance
No digging or soil disturbance
No equipment left unattended onsite
Bird nests to be avoided
