Summary of Activity:
Arctic and alpine regions are warming faster than anywhere else on Earth. One of the most dramatic consequences of this is the melting of glaciers that serve as sources of water and nutrients, but also contaminants to downstream ecosystems and communities. The Yukon River, the fifth largest in the Arctic, originates from the glaciers in the mountains of Atlin/Áa Tlein Téixi Park in northern British Columbia and is a culturally, ecologically and economically valuable waterway. Researchers from Yukon University, in collaboration with representatives from Carcross/Tagish First Nation (C/TFN) and Taku River Tlingit First Nation (TRTFN) governments, wish to assess water quality and quantity in the Yukon River headwaters. Within Atlin/Áa Tlein Téixi Park, and across the conservancies of the Yukon River headwaters, the program would sample/measure snow, glaciers, groundwater seeps and lake and river waters, including monitoring water levels and discharge.
