Mount Edziza, Canada's largest stratovolcano, remains understudied due to its remote location. This project aims to collect geological samples from the Mount Edziza Volcanic Complex to better understand its eruptive history over the last ~12,000 years. Previous research identified ash (tephra) deposits along Highway 37 and up to 230 km east of Edziza, representing 9–13 explosive eruptions likely linked to Mount Edziza and the Iskut Volcanic Field. To confirm eruption sources and improve volcanic hazard assessments for nearby communities and infrastructure, we will collect small rock samples from volcanic vents, cones, and lava flows, as well as a peat core near Raspberry Pass/Bourgeaux Creek to investigate reported tephra layers. The project will also support mapping of Edziza's glaciers, which have not been comprehensively documented since the 1970s–80s, to assess environmental change and identify newly exposed volcanic features. Fieldwork is expected to take approximately 10 days between August and mid-September and will involve helicopter access, camping, and hiking. Sampling will be limited to small hand-sized specimens, with minimal impact on the park environment.
