Summary of Proposed Activity:
We (the UBC Botanical Garden Collections and Research staff) would like to collect specimens of Rhododendron columbium along the Rein Orchid Trail. We will collect 50 g (in terms of dry weight) of leaves, 50 g (in terms of dry weight) of flowers, and two branches (each with a single cluster of leaves and flowers) for herbarium specimens. The leaves and flowers we collect will be dried and sent to our collaborator Dr. Lina Raudone, head of the Biopharmaceutical Research Laboratory at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Technologies, Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, to analyze the phytochemicals and antioxidants of Rhododendron columbianum. The herbarium specimens will be delivered to the UBC Herbarium to provide scientists with a reference to the plants sampled for the study. The specimens could also serve as repositories for follow-up studies on the taxonomy, genetics, phenotypic traits, etc.
