Mobile Optimist Sailing School (MOSS) is a community youth sailing program offering introductory and developmental sailing instruction to children and youth using Optimist dinghies. The program operates on a mobile basis, bringing sailing education directly to accessible waterfront locations. Locally, the camps have been hosted in West Arrow Park in 2004 and 2005. To better serve the children in the community of Nakusp, we are hoping to use the beach area adjacent to the boat launch at McDonald Creek during the first two weeks of August 2026. To serve the youth of Revelstoke, we hope to utilize Martha Creek, where have had a permit years ago that has since expired, for the last three weeks of July. (dates have been confirmed, but the permit application lists the entire summer season, in case illness, mechanical issues or other unforeseen circumstances force an adjustment of the camp schedule). MOSS provides structured, safety-focused instruction led by trained instructors, with a curriculum designed to build foundational sailing skills, water safety awareness, and confidence on the water. The program serves youth of varying experience levels, from complete beginners to developing sailors, and is committed to making sailing accessible to young people in the region. Program activities include supervised on-water sailing instruction, land-based safety briefings, and rigging demonstrations. Two certified coaches will supervise all camp activities and operate a single motorized zodiac (9.9hp) for on-water safety. All participants wear Transport Canada approved personal flotation devices at all times on and near the water. Instruction is conducted in small groups to ensure appropriate supervision ratios and participant safety. All equipment, personnel and activities are fully insured. There is a maximum of 15 participants each week and a minimum of 6.
